The defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has become a major news topic on Twitch as top streamers like Pokimane (9.1 million followers) and xQc (10.7 million followers) joined the hype train in a hurry to maximize their viewership, Kotaku first reported. Streamers are actively putting the actors' names in their titles to gain more views and, apparently, this technique has paid off as some streams gained almost 600,000 views alone.
What's more, the case is popular not only in the "Just Chatting" category but also among gamers like shortyyguy (381,000 followers) who are debating about who might be the real victim in the case. Some even took to Twitter to see the community's thoughts on the matter.
The legal battles between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard started back in 2019 when Depp a lawsuit against Heard over an op-ed she wrote in 2018 for The Washington Post titled, "I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change."
Although Heard's article doesn't mention Depp directly, she wrote in it that prior to publishing, she became a "public figure representing domestic abuse" just when she was married to Depp (from 2015 to 2017).
Depp is suing his ex-wife for $50 million for defamation. Amber is countersuing for $100 million for damages. The trial is scheduled to end on May 27, when arguments from both sides will be heard.
