Update (Feb. 7, 13:12 UTC). A group of cypherpunks raised nearly $40 million in ETH to help Julian Assange in his legal fight against US extradition.

A DAO is raising funds to free Wikileaks founder Julian Assange who can be extradited to the US to face espionage charges.

The DAO says it plans to raise ETH in return for the JUSTICE governance token to bid on a 1/1 non-fungible token (NFT) minted by digital artist Pak.

The proceeds from the NFT sale are said to help Julian Assange's defense fund for "legal fees and campaigning to raise awareness about Julian's extradition case." The description adds:

The Assange family have worked closely with the DAO and endorses its efforts to unite cypherpunks all over the world.

As of press time, the DAO has raised 1,602.24 ETH (~$4.5 million).

The fundraising is expected to continue until February 7, when Assange’s NFT collection will be dropped on a custom platform developed by Pak and Assange’s brother Shipton.
